Kingston on Soar, St Wilfrid, Nottinghamshire*

“Some treasures are found in the most unexpected places. Kingston is a rebuilt church of 1900 whose exterior hardly rates a second glance, yet it houses the extraordinary Babingon memorial…The huge capitals are decorated with babies holding barrels. Between the east piers is a lovely carved relief of the Last Judgement, damaged but still discernible. Buildings rise behind the blessed and the damned. A benign God sits on top and the jaws of Hell are open wide at the bottom.”
