“It’s faintly scruffy charm is an Esher surprise…the monument shows Princess Charlotte giving charity to the poor of Esher.”

Chaldon, St Peter and St Paul, Surrey, *

“The basis of Chaldon’s fame is a primitive wall painting discovered beneath whitewash in 1870. Dated to about 1200, it is claimed by the guide to be the earliest in Britain…What is remarkable about Chaldon is its subject, the Ladder of Salvation rising out of Purgatory, and its fine preservation. The artistry is gauche, like a child’s version of an Egyptian tomb mural. But the vitality of the figures, especially those down in Hell, and the horror of the subject matter, makes Chaldon a favourite example of early English art.”
